Accelerated Sophomores

The PSAT / NMSQT is a preparatory test for the SAT. As a sophomore, you are not eligible for the scholarship competition this year, but the experience gained from taking the PSAT could be valuable during your junior year when you do become eligible for the National Merit Competition. This is great practice for college entrance tests.

Juniors (Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)

The PSAT / NMSQT is a preparatory test for the SAT (College Admissions Test). The PSAT measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning and writing skills that are important for success in college. The tests cover knowledge and skills developed through years of study in a wide range of courses. It also tests the ability to reason with facts and concepts rather than the ability to recall them.

Why take the test?

1. This is how you would qualify for participation in the National Merit Scholarship program which is a four-year renewable scholarship if you become a National Merit Scholar winner.

2. Qualify for other Corporate Sponsored Scholarships or Enrichment Programs that use the PSAT results. (See your Student Guide - students will receive one once they have registered)

3. Find out what the SAT (College Admissions Test) is like before you take it.

How to prepare for the PSAT?

1. Become familiar with the kinds of questions on the test.

2. Learn directions for each kind of question before the test so you will be familiar with them on test day. (See your Student Guide)

3. Practice, practice, practice. Visit www.collegeboard.com for more questions.

4. Test-taking strategies

a. This is a timed test – pace yourself.
b. Always go back and check answers if you have time left.

If you would like to register for the PSAT, the cost of the test is $16. Please make checks payable to Cloverleaf High School. Mrs. Smith in Guidance will collect money until all tests are purchased.

Students may sign up until Oct. 8, if tests are still available. This is a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up as soon as possible. When you pay, you will receive the Student Information Guide and a receipt.
