AC team off to a strong start

With a current overall record of 14-1, the Cloverleaf High School Academic Challenge team is off to a strong start in the 2017-18 season. Here’s a recap of the team’s latest matches.

On Oct. 7, the team competed in the Waynedale Invitational and finished in third place with a record of 7-1 on the day. The team's lone loss was to nationally ranked George Washington High School of Charleston, W. Va. However, the Colts avenged that loss in the afternoon by beating George Washington in the playoff rounds. High scorer for the varsity squad was senior Jackson Stuff. The junior varsity team, “playing up” as a varsity team, also had a successful day with a 6-2 record. Scoring was led by freshman Brooks Powalie.

In Summit County Academic Challenge League play on Oct. 9, the Colts had a perfect outing, posting a 3-0 record. In round one, Cloverleaf defeated Green by a score of 88-57. The Colts followed up with their biggest win so far of the year by beating six-time state champion and defending Northeast Regional champion Copley by a score of 70-64. The team closed out the evening by defeating Norton 76-24. Scoring totals saw a balanced attack with all members of the varsity team scoring individual points, led by senior and captain Emily Gladden. The junior varsity team also had a great night with an undefeated record of 3-0.
