Cloverleaf Schools will host David Frattare of the
Internet Crimes Against Children division of the FBI to share with parents the most up-to-date trends and concerns impacting children in the world of social media. The event takes place in the cafeteria at Cloverleaf Elementary School on Jan. 15. The presentation will start at 6 p.m. and last approximately one hour.
The world of social media and the accessibility of devices has changed just about everything in the way we communicate and interact with others. The immediate connections through apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat -- as well as the anxiety of getting “Likes” and comments on posts -- has created a very challenging environment for children.
Cloverleaf seeks to provide an opportunity for parents to get to know what apps children are using, which ones should be of concern to parents, how to monitor behaviors on apps/devices for healthy use, and other internet safety information.
"I cannot stress enough to families the importance of being proactive in managing your child’s use of social media," said Cloverleaf Middle School Principal Brian Madigan, who is organizing the event. "Once a child posts something about themselves or others, or shares personal information with strangers online, it is near impossible to retract."
This is an adults-only event. Parents of children from elementary through high school are encouraged to attend this presentation. Grandparents, clergy, youth leaders, educators, and other adults who work with children are welcome.
