Third- and fourth-graders at Seville Intermediate Elementary School waged a Penny War – raising $2,036 to help the Seville Historical Society pay for new windows in its museum.
The idea came from third-grade teacher Jennifer Kee, who read a newspaper story about the historical society’s need. For many years, third-grade students at Seville have taken field trips to the museum to learn about local history. Because Seville students will be moving to the new Cloverleaf Elementary School in Westfield Township in January, Seville staff and students thought the gift would be a nice way for the school to say “thank you” to the historical society.
Math teacher Lynn Wilson’s students helped count the pennies and staff at the Seville branch of FirstMerit bank deposited the 10 five-gallon buckets of change.
Historical society member Betty Wright – who is also a long-time math tutor and volunteer at Seville Intermediate – accepted the check on the museum’s behalf in front of a cheering assembly of students and staff on Nov. 18.
“If my arms were long enough, I’d hug you all at the same time,” Wright said.
