On Oct. 18, a mixture of 50 journalism and yearbook students from Cloverleaf High School attended the Ohio Scholastic Media Association's Regional Workshop at Kent State University.

The students' registrations were sponsored by a generous grant from the Cloverleaf Education Foundation. Each student could choose from various session offerings, some of which included news reporting, making the most of social media, photojournalism techniques, behind-the-scenes of broadcasting, determining good news topics, mastering grammar, ethical and legal issues in journalism, finding the right research resources, yearbook layout and what to expect from a career as a journalist.

"The workshop is a great way for high school students to explore many different ideas, techniques and skills for their high school, college and future careers in journalism, yearbook and graphic design," Cloverleaf High School journalism teacher John Carmigiano said.  "They also have the freedom to choose what they would like to get better at and focus on."

OSMA also offers a chance to have student work submitted and critiqued throughout the school year to encourage growth. Schools in Ohio compete against one another in various journalism and yearbook categories.

"We have been attending this event the past few years and appreciate the support of the Cloverleaf Education Foundation,"  Carmigiano said. "Our hope is that each student will find one thing to make their experiences better throughout the year."
