Income tax cut takes effect Jan. 1

WESTFIELD TWP. – Cloverleaf residents will see extra money in their paychecks starting Jan. 1, thanks to a tax cut formally approved by the Board of Education at a Nov. 9 special meeting.

The resolution makes good on the board’s promise to reduce the district’s earned income tax by 0.25 percent following passage of a 4.2-mill operating levy renewal on the Nov. 8 ballot. Voters approved the renewal 4,448 to 4,132 in unofficial results posted by the Medina County Board of Elections.

“This bold move by the board of education shows our community that Cloverleaf is being fiscally responsive to our taxpayers during a tough economy,” said Superintendent Daryl Kubilus.

It’s the second consecutive levy renewal in which the board has cut taxes. In 2020, when voters approved renewal of the district’s 2-mill Permanent Improvement levy, the board followed through on its promise to reduce the levy’s collection to 1.39 mills.

Kubilus will ask the board to make tax reduction a centerpiece of the next operating levy renewal in 2024. This is in addition to the district keeping its promises to hold the line on new taxes and to devote NEXUS natural gas pipeline tax revenue to building new 6-12-grade facilities without a taxpayer-funded bond issue. Cloverleaf is committed to maintaining its relationship of trust with constituents.

“Through years of experience, I have learned never to take a renewal levy for granted — especially considering our current economy,” Kubilus said. “I am grateful to members of the Cloverleaf community for their vote of confidence in our schools and their desire to ‘Keep a Great Thing Going’ by approving this first of three levy renewals on our books. It’s a great day for Cloverleaf!”
