Senior Juliet Pintos is Cloverleaf’s first-ever Silver Key winner in the category of art portfolio. Her collection is a work of political satire titled, “The American Nightmare.” She pokes fun at politics using hidden images and blunt text that prompt viewers to search for details that together tell a story. Juliet also received a Gold Key for her individual work, “The American Dream.”

 

“I create vibrant images with colored pencils by layering color over ink, paint, collage and newspaper. The blendability of colored pencils allows me to walk the fine line between realism/cartoon art where I shade realistically and leave a flat 2D image,” she said. “My work is designed to stir up emotional responses including the inevitable offending of politicians, protesters, or the media. I conceptualize my ideas while watching the news or reading media thoughts on a speech, debate and questions asked or answered by writing down and repeating to see others’ reactions. Did I go too far or not far enough?"

 

Juliet plans to continue her art studies in college and has been accepted at The Ohio State University and Columbus College of Art and Design.

 

Senior Olivia Gillespie was awarded a Gold Key for her individual artwork, "The Sustainable Shoes.” A total of four CHS students submitted entries in the Scholastic competition – deciding on their own which works to include, since the December submission deadline came when Cloverleaf was in remote instruction due to COVID-19, said teacher Julie Krueger.

 

“I am always amazed at the level of skill that the students display through their artwork,” Mrs. Krueger said. “I love that I have the opportunity to guide them in their learning to help them improve what is already great. The two Gold Key works will move on to the national competition. Let's hope for another win!”
