Big changes for Youth Girls Basketball

The inaugural Cloverleaf Youth Girls Basketball (CYGB) program will begin with sign-ups in October in an attempt to revive the interest of the sport among young girls in the community.

The Cloverleaf High School girls basketball players and coaches are getting behind the project by bringing the program to the CES and CHS gyms, and helping them in their practices and games from November through January.

“This is a great opportunity for our staff and players to offer our assistance and get involved more closely with these young basketball players in the Cloverleaf system,” Head Girls Basketball Coach John Carmigiano said. “The numbers in the rec program for girls have been declining over the past five years and we felt like we needed to try something different to get girls excited about basketball again.”

They know they can’t do it alone though, and they hope to find some Cloverleaf parent support and assistance to run some of the teams.

“The rec program has had some great parents helping out, and we hope to keep them on board, and find even more community members that are interested in helping and coaching these teams with us,” Carmigiano said. “The program can only grow with the support of the families of Cloverleaf – parents and players alike.”

The CYGB will offer three affordable programs for girls in grades 1-6 in its initial season, including Little Dribblers ($30), Rec League ($40), and Travel Teams ($60). They will have two sign-up days on Oct. 12 at the CHS gym and Oct. 20 at the CES gym from 6-8 p.m.

For the sign-ups, parents are asked to bring a registration form and payment, while the players can come dressed to take part in a workout. The Little Dribblers and Rec League players will be from 6-7 p.m. and the Travel players will meet from 7-8 p.m. each night. Players are encouraged to attend one or both of the nights.

“If your daughter already has a passion for basketball, or is even remotely interested, we would encourage you to take a chance and bring them out,” Carmigiano said. “This will be a lot of fun and our players can’t wait to share their love for basketball with these young players.”
