A generous donation of books

Each of Cloverleaf High School’s freshmen has a new book to read and discuss in English class, thanks to King’s Daughters and Sons of Medina.

Five members of the service organization visited teacher Joel Shurance’s classroom Sept. 7 as they delivered 200 copies of Paul Fleischman’s 1998 novel “Whirligig” to students.

King’s Daughters and Sons member Sue Bryenton said the group’s focus is promoting literacy and supporting individuals with autism. When members approached the school with the idea of donating books, teachers suggested “Whirligig” -- the story of a 17-year-old boy who embarks on a cross-country mission of atonement after causing a fatal car crash. Each ninth-grader gets to keep his or her copy when students finish discussing the book in class.

“(King’s Daughters and Sons) were extremely generous and kind,” Shurance said.
The books were donated in memory of Betsy Zuk – a Cloverleaf community member, substitute teacher and literacy assistant who passed away in July. Zuk’s mother, Linda Sweeney, is a member of King’s Daughters and Sons.

The organization also sponsors a college scholarship for high school seniors. Applications are available in the Cloverleaf High School guidance office.
