Real Money Real World at CMS

On March 26, Cloverleaf Middle School hosted the Ohio State University Extension financial literacy program “Real Money Real World.” It includes interactive spending simulations that provide middle school students opportunities to make budget choices similar to those made by adults.

Students are assigned various career and family scenarios in which they have to meet financial responsibilities – such as providing childcare and paying bills – with a set income. Participants must make spending decisions on topics such as housing, insurance, food, clothing, entertainment, utilities, charitable contributions, entertainment, credit cards, and cell phone costs.

Businesses, high school students and community volunteers participated in the program, talking with students at various stations about how to budget their money and how to distinguish between “needs” and “wants.”

The event was made possible through the efforts of Ohio State University Extension Family and Consumer Science Educator Joanna Rini, Westfield Insurance, Cloverleaf Middle School PTO, the Cloverleaf JOG program, Cloverleaf Middle School social studies teachers and the Cloverleaf Middle School custodial staff.
