CHS seniors named Commended Students

Cloverleaf seniors Lauren Perry and Ben Stefanko have been recognized as Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students have placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2014 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The awards were presented by Cloverleaf High School Principal Jamie Lormeau.

At Cloverleaf, Perry participates in IMPACT, National Honor Society, Swing Choir and Math League. After graduation, she plans to major in pharmacy. Her parents are Melissa and Michael Perry of Westfield Center.

Perry said she felt positive about the three-and-a-half-hour test.

“I felt prepared, that I would do well,” she said.

Stefanko’s activities include marching band (the last two seasons as a field commander), National Honor Society, student council, Academic Challenge, Swing Choir, track and field, ski club, Math League and 4-H. In college, he plans to major in engineering. His parents are Theresa and Joe Stefanko of Chatham Township.

He recommends taking the test more than once during high school to become familiar with it, since the test can be intimidating. Stefanko added he’s grateful to the Cloverleaf teachers who have supported him in his academic career.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarship Awards, it’s a noteworthy achievement.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
