Academic Challenge team competes at nationals

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Cloverleaf High School Academic Challenge Team competed in the High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta. Cloverleaf was one of 304 of the premier teams from the United States and Canada that earned a right to compete for a national championship. The team finished with a record of 5-5 in the preliminary rounds and a record of 8-7 overall, with a final ranking of 170 out of 304 teams.

The team consisted of senior Grace Garbonick; juniors Jacob Berchtold, Emily Gladden, Nate Powalie and Jackson Stuff; sophomores Joseph Masarro and Grace Schmitt; and incoming freshman Brooks Powalie. Scoring for the team was lead by Stuff who completed the tournament ranked 190th out of 1,474 individual players, placing him in the top 12 percent of scoring in the nation. Team captain Emily Gladden ranked 432nd.

The HSNCT caps off one of the most successful seasons in Cloverleaf’s history. In addition to qualifying for the national tournament, the team was the Portage Trail Conference champion, Ohio Academic Competition Northeast Regional Playoffs runner-up, and completed its regular season ranked ninth in the state of Ohio.
