Extended School Year

What is Extended School Year?

Extended School Year (ESY) is the term for special education services and supports that are provided to eligible students once the traditional school year has come to an end. The  types of services that can be offered by a school district are wide-ranging and vary from district to district.

How Does a Student Become Eligible?

When a student with special education services demonstrates a significant regression, or loss, of skills during periods when instruction is not typically offered (long weekends, holidays, spring or summer breaks, etc.) AND they are unable to recoup, or regain, those skills within a reasonable amount of time, the IEP Team can determine that ESY services are needed.
